What are the most common myths and stereotypes about what Indians eat? The biggest myth, of course, is that India is a largely vegetarian country. But that's not the case at all. Past "non-serious" estimates have suggested that more than a third of Indians ate vegetarian food. If you go by three large-scale government surveys, 23%-37% of Indians are estimated to be vegetarian. By itself this is nothing remarkably revelatory. But new research by US-based anthropologist Balmurli Natrajan and India-based economist Suraj Jacob, points to a heap of evidence that even these are inflated estimations because of "cultural and political pressures". So people under-report eating meat - particularly beef - and over-report eating vegetarian food. Taking all this into account, say the researchers, only about 20% of Indians are actually vegetarian - much lower than common claims and stereotypes suggest.Hindus, who make up 80% of the Indian population, are major meat-eaters. Even only a third of the privileged, upper-caste Indians are vegetarian. The government data shows that vegetarian households have higher income and consumption - are more affluent than meat-eating households. The lower castes, Dalits (formerly known as untouchables) and tribes-people are mainly meat eaters. -- www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-india-43581122

A lot of the Indians in my city eat meat. I want to say that out of the Indians that I know, 75% eat meat and the rest don't. But they do try to limit eating it all the time though. I'm surprised about the beef though...cows are supposed to be sacred or something to them. Hmm

What about the aryans, who came from ANDRONOVO?
I guess, they were not vegetarians, neither were the invading mongol, uzbeks, turkmens, portugese etc.
This vegetarianism started after post 1960.
India runs on mythologies, not on facts and realities.

It was the Buddha and Mahavira who created a culture of nonviolence and vegetarianism in India. When a king was about to create an animal sacrfifice with a little goat, the Buddha asked him to sacrifice himself instead of the goat, astonishing the king. I was a nonvegetarian myself and enjoyed nonvegetarian dishes myself, but became a vegetarian later on after a few visits to the butcher shop. Seeing the terrified animals and birds and panic stricken chickens jumping around in terror after getting their necks cut by the butcher, created a very sad impression on me. I felt like being an accomplice to cruelty and murder. This made me change to a vegetarian. Being vegetarian has helped me a lot. It has made me look lean and younglooking, while my nonvegetarian friends have large waistlines and fat bodies. Research conducted by oxford university and others have showed that vegetarianism is linked with lower incidence of cancer and heart diseases. A vegetarian diet is considered to have less of a negative impact on global warming as well, and can help fight climate change. www.ox.ac.uk/news/2018-10-12-balanced-plant-based-diets-improve-our-health-and-health-planetwww.bbc.com/news/science-environment-49238749I think this shows that if you are friendly to nature, nature becomes friendly to you as well.

The renaissance superman Leonardo da Vinci, Greek mathematician Pythagoras, Leo Tolstoy and George Bernard Shaw are other famous vegetarians.
“As long as Man continues to be the ruthless destroyer of lower living beings, he will never know health or peace. For as long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other. Indeed, he who sows the seed of murder and pain cannot reap joy and love.” ― Pythagoras
“Animals are my friends...and I don't eat my friends.” ― George Bernard Shaw
“A man can live and be healthy without killing animals for food; therefore, if he eats meat, he participates in taking animal life merely for the sake of his appetite. And to act so is immoral.” ― Leo Tolstoy
“Until he extends the circle of his compassion to all living things, man will not himself find peace.” ― Albert Schweitzer
“Non-violence leads to the highest ethics, which is the goal of all evolution. Until we stop harming all other living beings, we are still savages.” ― Thomas A. Edison
“It is my view that the vegetarian manner of living, by its purely physical effect on the human temperament, would most beneficially influence the lot of mankind.” ― Albert Einstein
I have from an early age abjured the use of meat, and the time will come when men such as I will look upon the murder of animals as they now look upon the murder of men. ~ Leonardo da Vinci
Some sayings on vegetarianism from the ancient book Thirukkural...
Not to kill and eat (the flesh of) an animal, is better than the pouring forth of ghee etc., in a thousand sacrifices.
All creatures will join their hands together, and worship him who has never taken away life, nor eaten flesh.

No manly nation would put up with a caste system. Only neurotic weaklings would lie to themselves about the dogma that slavishness to inherited power will pay off in becoming a member of that caste after reincarnation. Natural habits have a way of reinforcing themselves. For most of mankind's history, it took a lot of courage to kill a wild animal. Eating meat creates that courage for the next hunt, which of course our own gutless and far-outnumbered hereditary tyranny will never let us know about. That's why they want us to tolerate and respect Vegans, who are a danger to democracy. This religion of cowardice explains why the Indians were easily conquered by the British, whom they outnumbered 10,000 to one.

These people are like that only, all they want is a bit of material comforts, and for that, they would slave forever.
And they happily accept this slavery by creating these nonsensical mythologies, that it is will of god, fate etc

Checked the dictionary but did not find it.
Caste system is just a feudal system that was present in europe, japan and Korea. It does not have a basis in the Vedas or Srutis and is just a manmade system that became obsolete with time.
The vedic sages, Buddha, Mahavira and Guru Nanak have also taught about the equality and fraternity of all human beings.

Have no idea where you got such a theory. Hinduism states that it is past karma and actions that determine the tendencies of a person and it has nothing to do with inheritance. As stated earlier, the caste system is just a feudal system.
//Natural habits have a way of reinforcing themselves. For most of mankind's history, it took a lot of courage to kill a wild animal. Eating meat creates that courage for the next hunt, which of course our own gutless and far-outnumbered hereditary tyranny will never let us know about. //
Hunting is a pasttime amongst Hindus as well. Hindu Kings and warriors used to hunt down lions and tigers who posed a threat to the common people. In fact, the tiger is an endangered species in India due to too much of trophy hunting by trigger happy hunters. Many species have become extinct due to such reckless hunting all over the world.
//This religion of cowardice explains why the Indians were easily conquered by the British, whom they outnumbered 10,000 to one. //
Ever heard of the Bhagavad Gita, the gospel that was taught in the middle of the battlefield.
The British invaded India using the sword of well-paid Indian mercenaries. Indians have an ancient martial tradition, but lacked in a political identity that comes with being a single nation state then, and most kingdoms were given to infighting rather than organising themselves to form a single political entity then.
The Indian empire had been a single entity during the time of Chandragupta Maurya of Shudra origin and who defeated the Greeks under Seleucus. It was also a single political entity under Ashoka the Great and Samudragupta two milleniums back.
