It's quite simple, despite many factors, analysis needed, thought. The most relevant answer is that most (Eastern) Ukrainians are just Russians. So, imagine a smaller army with less potential, and more problems within is fighting against the much more larger one. Who wins? – Not the former.
The inner politics of Zelensky and his thugs ruined and spoiled all the possible chances by his dictator's ambitions. He's turned Ukraine into the more vulgar and barbarian Russia, than Russian itself. There's no need to demonstrate all those numerous videos of violence and completely mad inside politics in Ukraine, because Ukrainians themselves download plenty of such videos daily. One thing became incredibly hard is to get rid of another dictator.
Trump was right, when he compared a jew Zelensky to just a skilled seller, that's about it, that's a what Zelensky wanted to do. Obviously, for the war management isn't a single thing to do, the newer dictator has decided the opposite. So, instead of fighting against Putin, today's Europe will encounter a new one – Zelensky

Putin violated international law by invading. Daily we risk nuclear catastrophe. His stipulated reason for invading was simply put as: NATO.
The violation of international law is just a fact that has set an awful international precedent. (precedent not president - note the difference says the English teacher!)
As far as I can tell the east of Ukraine was traditionally not Russian in the countryside, but the Soviet Russians built cities and began to dominate post ww2. (Correct me if i am wrong about this, my info may be misleading)
But the axis of evil has already formed with North Koreans numbering at least 8000 in the mix. More on the way... The forces that put these pieces in play must be seen outside of the local conflict. It is an international arena.
China's economy was pushing Putin's buttons. If he tries to un-invade, it will just be a re-arming...

Both sides have interest to continue the contest. Yes, I agree that it's too obvious that China is behind this.
