In the olden days, humans did not know or have the concept of Mercy. When another tribe offended them they would summon their own tribe, rise against the offending tribe, and completely wipe them out. Whole tribes and races have been wiped out through this. Men took no prisoners. There was no concept that said that even though you have rightfully been offended, you should stop somewhere when meting out punishment upon them. Or at least kill some and take the rest as prisoners. Or stop when your opponent admitted defeat and begged for mercy.
One of the most disturbing things I have had to witness while teaching children the word of God in some communities was when a child was fighting with another child, and all she did was look away from her opponent and keep throwing blows at her. She would not even look at her opponent to know her condition, to know where to stop. She did not care whether her opponent was bleeding to death or was at the point of losing her life.
Then one day a preacher walked the streets and started preaching about mercy. God is merciful and his children should show Mercy too. You have rightfully been wronged but this does not justify wiping out an entire village.
The taking of prisoners was therefore an advancement in human civilization, and nations that did not practice this were deemed uncivilized.

We also didn't have personalities or a singular identity singular identity "self" Then one day the imagination took over and controlled are entire existence and the rest is history.
