There are plenty of different paradoxes within as logic so math, etc. Many logicians, mathematicians, etc proposed a way to get rid of some problems within logic and math by adding a new dimension for another type of language.
They said along with a current language for the task there's also another one behind it. In results the main structure of language got that "map":
– things – references – current language – metalanguage
1. Things are just things in reality, world, and so on. 2. What references mean is that what exactly we point at, or what do we mean by referring to a thing or things. 3. The current language might be what you're using, or some other as a formal one, or kinda. 4. It's also any language (as a form), but it says only about the current language.
While the language we use point at deities of perceptions, or by using the current language we talk about things as we see them, the metalanguage talks about the current language only. It is quite the same as talking about the rules of how to use language.
The bad idea is that there might be plenty of metalanguages: 2nd talks about 1st, 3rd about 2nd, and so forth.
The question is – is it really so necessary for us to use those metalanguage idea? Is it possible to just use names that tag to things solely?

The Philosophy of Language and the Philosophy of Linguistics can be super fascinating, and it can also be very complex, obtuse and boring. There are many takes on the subject with very different views. Some good philosophers to read about language are: Ludwig Wittgenstein, Gottlob Frege, Donald Davidson, and Alfred Tarski to name a few well-known philosophers that have tackled the subject.
