Because I don't read lots of in English it's uneasy for me to drop links, but I may advice some as with names of writers and books.

I know plenty so don't know where to start. Let it be an American writer Ambsore Bierce and his "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge". It's short as a fuse of dinamite that blows one's mind while reading it.

Yeah, there are plenty, but you know, I won't advice textbooks, I know some books people would find interesting as something not directly academical. Here's few of them:

By the way, lately I started reading Bram Stocker's "Dracula". I don't know have you read it, but I guess - I am sure - you've heard about such a creepy monster, haven't you? =) It is the 2nd time I read this book, and I must say it's written well-done. Sometimes it's quite boring, and some of episodes blow my mind: as in the beginning, when the first teller (Michael Harker) tells about Slovakia, and its inhabitant. Well, I have to say that Slovaks are indeed work-hard and unite folk; of course, I guess they were described exactly so, but with little addition of unusual barbarism, etc. Well, no, it's not like that. I guess such prejudices or superstitions come from the more major communities as Hungarians or Slovenians, who usually attacked Slovaks (actually, without any ground reason). But anyway, I adore the way how Bram Stoker - how cosy and softly - he describes and presents to us many many things. I'd say that his novel - is a link - between the modern and the past novelty style. It is not easy to define to which traditions he refers mostly. I could say it was written by Oskar Wilde, or by William Faulkner.
