I don't know why its some revelation or shock to people that the Puritans were left wing. They were utopians who wanted to tear down every institution of the society in which they lived and recreate it in their own speculative image. They were the fanatical social justice warriors of their day. Look in any place in the United States first settled by Puritans or their descendants. With the exception of Utah and the Mormon corridor they are the most radically left wing places in the country.
