Whatifalthist legit may be my favorite person on Youtube. He covers topics that I'm interested in and when he expresses an opinion I 99% of the time agree with it. He is a truly underrated gem.

They miss a vital point: nepotism replacing merit. That becomes easier as the society gets larger and harder to regulate.
Until a war, after which everyone vows to be more honest to avoid such disaster in future.
The longer without a war, the more likely it is that the danger of nepotism prevails.
In a war, you got to be sure the best that are suited for the job get given the position, or you die.
Sad reality. Hopefully by now these lessons can be learned from previous generations mistakes, and we do not need to be pushed to hell to appreciate heaven.
I'm not holding my breath.

This is also why existential wars like WW2 can lead to technological breakthroughs. The technological development of the 1950's, and hence the economical growth, was largely based on innovations during WW2, such as the jet engine.
