When astrophysicists first started estimating the amount of mass in galaxies, it was a statistical measurement based on the amount of light they emitted.
This came from the amount of light proportional to mass in our solar system.
But then came "gravitational lensing" - where light is bent by gravity. It was then realized that there is quite a bit more matter, NOT associated with the light model.
This extra matter was simply labelled "dark matter" to separate it from the previous estimate.
So there are more un-shining objects in galaxies, like planets and dust and asteroids, than was previously estimated.
That is all it is.
