Stalin started supporting the Orthodox church after the German invasion, realizing that it would help unifying the Russian people against the Nazis.

Yes, I know it. But to be historically closer there were enough cases when the Church worked even in pre-war period. It happened rather rarely, but some of such facts were true. In most of the case in the Stalin era was - to put preachers into the cells. I mean Stalin was a cruel person who sent many people to prison for no reason.
