Historians often debate whether King Arthur, the legendary King of the Britons written about in the Matter of Britain was a real person with a lot of modern historians dismissing his existence do to lack of evidence. However I tend to agree with the historians that say King Arthur is a folktale that is a composite of many different people in history but is mostly based off of the very real figure of Ambrosius Aurelianus, and to me in studying the evidence this is pretty obvious.
So to to start what is the legend of King Arthur? King Arthur was allegedly a King of the Romanized Britons who successfully fought against the Anglo Saxons in the 5th and 6th centuries in twelve battles concluding in the Battle of Badon. After beating the Saxons he created a Golden Age of peace and prosperity called Camelot. And theres a Wizard called Merlin, and an Island called Avalon, and this lady in this lake, and a sword that he pulled out of a stone and other crazy stuff. In the end Camelot falls because of Mordred's betrayal and the Anglo Saxons conquer Britain.
So who is Ambrosius Aurelianus? Basically after the Romans pulled out of Britain to protect their core territory, Britannia was left defenseless and was subject to raids by Picts, Scots, and Irish so the military dictator Vortigorn invited the Saxons to Britain's shores to fight the raiders; the Saxons won but then the Saxons turned on the native British and became their scourge. After the invasion of the Saxons devastated the Britons in the 5th century the survivors gathered under Ambrosius Aurelianus, a man who might have been descended from Roman Emperors and was called the, "Last of the Romans" by later Historians because he was one of the last blood descendants of the Romans in Britain at the time. Anyways, according to the ancient historian Gildas, Ambrosius waged a successful war on the Saxons with a bunch of battles that concluded with the same Battle of Badon that king Arthur is later credited with leading (evidence that they were at least originally one and the same). After Ambrosius's success at the battle of Badon there was a long peace in a Britain which had been ravaged by constant wars for countless years. This peace was the Golden Age known as "Camelot." Ambrosius died from being poisoned; in other words he died from treachery.
In the legends of King Arthur Ambrosius is mentioned as the uncle of King Arthur suggesting that they are separate people. However my thesis is that King Arthur is a mythical figure that is composed of many different historical persons and their exploits as his folklore evolved but the base person in creating this figure was Ambrosius Aurelianus to such an extent that Ambrosius Aurelienus and Arthur Pendragon are effectively one and the same person. Arthur only became a separate figure later on.
