The nature of the state is always violent and its action is unacceptable, but many people have difficulty in visualizing what a society without the state would look like.
This is perfectly understandable, after all, the state makes great efforts to be present in all moments of our life, and through controlled education, it makes us unable to imagine life without its action, just as a hostage eventually learns to depend on his captor in order to get feed.
But just open your eyes and mind a little and you will realize: anarchism is all around you. Almost everything around it was produced, sold and transported in a totally anarchic and peaceful way. Almost all of the inventions that enriched and brightened our lives were created freely by the will of curious and ambitious people. Almost all of the interactions we have in our lives are peaceful and voluntary.
In large part, society is already anarchic. The state is just an aberration between us.
Often people ask me what anarchism would be like. “Oh, this is utopian, I can’t imagine what it is like”. Basic thing, the first thing you need to understand about a free society is this: you know that idea that you had at school that would be shooting or chaos and destruction and that’s why you need the state organizing things, the same state that organizes the things you will learn at school, that anarchism causes gunfire, so you need the state. Do you understand the problem? So you already know that this is not a reliable source.
Now, what is the idea of anarchism? You can think like chess, chess is deeply anarchic and has no chess judge. Chess has certain rules, whoever wants to enter it to play, play by the rules, or do not play. If someone doesn’t play with you in the rules, leave. People tend to think that an anarcho-capitalist society will not have rules, however there will be rules, they will be produced by individuals, by companies, by ideas and by rights production agencies. For instance; I want these types of laws, which are protections against property (because there is only a crime against property) and if someone attacks me, that agency will act and guarantee that I will be compensated, probably the other person will have an agency too and they will enter into some discussion and mediation and hardly any shot will be fired, because violence is extremely expensive.
So the only way I can get the best thing for me, is producing a lot and then exchanging with people, and they will only exchange with me if I give them exactly what they want, then everyone will be in a system where they will try to provide the needs of others to get what they want in exchange for money.
Sorry, where’s the chaos and the shooting?
I could go to my neighbor’s apartment and steal everything he has, for example. I would get a lot of things quickly and my life would be ruined. And it’s not even because of the state, but it’s because no one would take me seriously in life. So what is the central idea of anarchism, what is the idea of a free society? It is that people will act in a deeply selfish way, they will seek what is best for them, and the best thing for them is to exchange with other people. Because if I want something, the best thing I can do is find someone who has it and exchange it. It would be insane if I tried to make my own mobile phone, it is much better to go out and just buy one.
Then you ask me, what will anarchism be like?
First of all, I am not a central planner. Anarchy, a free society, is a society where people will develop technologies for themselves or produce individually among themselves, several different people will do things, sometimes the same thing, and they will compete, and some will work and others will not. You will have several different services. While the state is central planning, a guy decides how it is going to be, it’s approved in there and that’s the service and everyone else is illegal, that’s central planning. Asking me to plan an anarcho-capitalism society, is asking me to be a central planner, so there’s no point in asking that. I can give guesses, “oh, maybe justice could be like this, or education could be like this”, but one of you can say “wait, I had another idea!”, and you can try that idea as well, and whoever wants, buy it, and whoever doesn’t want, don’t buy.
As the state, how does it work? I created an idea if I didn’t like the guy’s other idea I forbid it.
Now that you understood this, you can ask what would be a free market, an anarcho-capitalist society.
It is a society where people produce services, products, ideas and you consume them however you want, and if you don’t want to consume them then you don’t consume them. So, look around you now and you will realize something fantastic.
You are reading this through a device, this device is made of thousands of pieces of metal and plastic, and none of the people who participated in their production know that you exist. They all did this, through money exchanges. Why? Because it was better for them. None of them has any information about what was done and it doesn’t matter. The information is diffuse, there was no organization, and it is done. “Oh, but there were companies” and what are they? The free association between people looking for profit, they get together to refine a product, another company buys it and can elaborate it in a way, and another one can redistribute that same product, and finally, in the last few steps it becomes your phone, and nobody in the chain knows each other. Half of them may be black and the other half may be racist, one may not like the other, one may be republican and another democrat, but they work, because they want credit and so they collaborate. The device you are reading this article for now is full proof of anarcho-capitalism. A lot of companies contributed to build this for you and the state didn’t regulate it, there may be nitpicks like “the cable has to be like this, the plug has to be like that” but the state said what the resolution of this should be, how it should be produced? No way. And yet it was produced, and if the state tried to do that it would go wrong, you know that.
Look around you. Almost everything that enriches your life was produced entirely voluntarily, and everyone is more satisfied in this transition, because it was a free exchange, nobody was forced to do it. And yet, at the time of purchase, the state is waiting there, proclaiming at gun point “give me 40, 60 percent of it” if not, I shoot you, arrest you or “fine” you. There lies the state, but other than that, it works.
So, how will anarcho-capitalism be? Like that, only better, because there will be no state.
