Between 1614 and 1775 more than 50,000 English men, women, and children were sentenced to be deported to the American colonies for crimes ranging from the theft of a handkerchief to bigamy or highway robbery and sold as indentured servants from 7 to 14 years depending upon the crime against the crown. After more research 9,000 more were added to the list.
Well, I knew we sent many ‘undesirables’ to far flung countries ie Australia etc in the 1800’s but the number sent to America is overwhelming. This was kept incredibly quiet, I only happened upon it whilst looking for an ancestor.
