I am doing a bit of research on bee keeping over the winter in preparation of making a box this spring. Does any body here have any knowledge on bee keeping?

My grandpa has been a bee keeper in Ukraine my whole life if not longer. I will try to tell you what I remember and hopefully that helps. I don't remember if he did anything different during the different seasons but I mostly remember bees during warmer times and I guess during winter he had them put away in what I called their bee home. However, my memory on this isn't well. What I do remember clearly is how he dressed when dealing with bees. Pants with good shoes or boots and long sleeve shirt with gloves. Plus a hat and a net hanging of the net going all around the hat. Basically no skin exposed and net to see what he is doing. So dress well or they will sting you. I had a few bee stings myself and they're painful. I even heard some can have allergic reactions to bee stings so whether that is true or not be careful. If I remember anything else about bee keeping I will let you know. Bumble Bee

That is very cool! I've read there can be thousands of bees that fly to and from the bee-home in a swarm. Do you remember how the bees behaved around the area? I live in a pretty forested area where a lot of people have gardens, so I think they should their foot selection. I will certainly need good clothing for it. The gear ive seen beekeepers wear in movies reminds me of fence sword fighting suits.

Well, my grandpa kept them to make honey so we'd have honey. I never was too close to the area so can't clearly say how it was since only he was allowed near the bees since he was the only one who knew what he was doing. We can look from a distance only. Eventually a bee flew further and stinged us. A bee got me once when I was just twirling in a dress. Then I cried and went home . But anyway he kept them all in the bee house and let them out for...well not sure exactly why to take them out or keep them in..that you might need to research. My guess is they flew out when he tried to open their home to get their honey. But they stayed fairly together flying around him. So usually they stay close but some might fly off. How he got them all back in though I don't remember. I guess he would return that thing they made honey on. Fuzz memory here, sorry. But yeah you can also google some information. Yeah, the outfits are funny . I always thought he was dealing with monsters who were after him

I remember when I was little my grandfather also collected honey together with my uncle! They were dressed in special costumes and always told us - be careful- ! I was always neat! I do not remember a single bite! xD ))

I'm mostly interested in it for the experience. It would be neat to have a local colony in my back yard; the honey is a plus (:
The hive-mindedness of the colony is fascinating. I've read when two colonies come in contact in the wild, the two groups have some sort of communication where they basically tell eachother what neighborhood they're from and what they are doing, then they go on their way.
