Ask an Indian here. We have civic nationalism.
Unfortunately, in this scenario, what happens is that people just get in to the jingoistic part of nationalism. It is sort of pultocracy, where the authorities enjoy all the richness, and fool the public, using BREAD AND CIRCUS ploy. Even romans were a civic nationalis, later on and that's why it collapsed, though battle of teutoburg did play an important part in this.
This is the real problem with civic nationalism. If the nations get invaded, then people would never stand up. But, in case of ethnic nationalism, the warrior becomes part of the culture, as people consider the land as the holy land of their fathers.
I mean, you will have to collaborate with those, who you hate, because, you need to ensure that the kitchen is not empty. That's because, two person, if not bounded by same ancestry, genes and racial heritage, would never ever get along with each other well. How much this type of nationalism is imposed, it is bound to be broken. Yugoslavia is perfect example.
I would prefer ethnic nationalism on any given day. I would feel at ease, if i see people who look like, walk like, talk like me, and act like me.

However, if there's a king/ruler, who is able to bind people, on whom he is governing, by coding system of laws, which ensure that everyone don't lose their identity intact, then civic nationalism works best. in the past, the mythologies of aryan like duryodhana, and norse good king, baldr are examples of this. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duryodhanaen.wikipedia.org/wiki/BaldrThough, indians show aryan king as bad, unlike the norse mythology, which portray balder as good and just king.

I try believe that the group you belong to is the one you choose. I was born and raised Catholic though I am an atheist. I was born and raised Filipino yet I love America. I wad born and raised a conservative yet I embrace all ideas. I was born and raised to be a thousand things yet I disagree with them all. I am merely me.

I don't have an opinion, these are just two different things. Although I haven't heard about "ethnic nationality" neither, I presume you refer simply to ethnicity. You can have citizenship of a country X while being an ethnic Y, and you can have a citizenship of a country X while being an ethnic Y. I can't really have an opinion on that, but both cases seem reasonable and logical. Solid logic. There's nothing to add... except maybe just a couple of not worthy things. A. Being a citizen of a country X while not being ethnically to X; B. Being a citizen of a country Y while being ethnically to X. 'Ethnic nationality' is A, 'citizen's' is B. (^_^)
