West African history around Ghana is popularly divided up into three stages: Ancient Ghana, Medieval Mali, and Imperial Songhai, so Songhai would be the empire formerly subjugated by Mali who would conquer the waning Mali empire and establish a larger Songhai Empire, although it was arguably less stable.
It is a very interesting area of study because it is relatively not talked about in comparison to some other regions, there's a lot of room to be curious and explore, and those curiosities are satisfied with be very rich history of the western sudan
