as ive been reading up on testosterone a lot lately ive come to two conclusions: hormones are widely ignored and they are major components in not only personality and physical health, but may also be the cause of some usually thought incurable dis-eases such as bipolar disorder (formerly known as manio-depressive)
the opposite of testosterone is estrogen. we see many hormone disruptive chemicals used in food, plastic bottles made literally out of phthalate (PolyEthylene terePHTHALATE) and with BPA as plastic softerners. its a total minefield if you wanna be health concious as a man. there has been massive controversy about plant-estrogens, likely because its main protein source for vegans, soy. its 1% by weight phyto(plant)-estrogen, thats 100.000 microgrammes/100g - to put things into perspective peanuts are about 150µg phytoestrogen /100g, cow milk being about 150µg (mammalian) estrogen per litre - and milk has been up for debate whether it causes hormone problems
not to say soy is the worst, flax seeds is almost 4x worse, 371.000µg / 100g, this stuff is actually added to a lot of bread nowadays, and its absolute poison to a man. estrogen combats testosterone, and if you have low testosterone then you may have one or more signs of low testosterone as following: low sex drive, increasing bodyfat(this further lowers testosterone), muscle loss, fatigue, osteoporosis, erectile dysfunction(this is also partly to blame on too much estrogen), acting feminine and having feminine physique, low volume of ejaculate, shrinking testicles, less motivation/soy, bodyhair loss, you look older than you are, sleep dysfunction and last but not least depression(mood disorders related to depression to be included)
plant estrogens are however benifitial to women, as plant-hormones dont bind to our bodies like mammalian hormones do, but they act as free hormones, this means they dont cause a negative feedback mechanism, with testosterone you will have testicles shrinking due to body shutting down testosterone production, this is wellknown phenomena with steroids - but to men, estrogen is disasterous to anything a man would wanna be, and on top of that even highly carcinogenic.
now mood disorders linked to depression would be bipolar, this is commonly considered incurable, permanent and only to be dealt with through pharmaceutical drugs to stabilize brainchemistry. i came across an article a week ago where a man that appears to have some psychiatric background noticed that women with bipolar tends to exert high testosterone, and the men were the exact opposite -- unnatural hormone balance.

he explains treating the men with HRT (steroids) was somewhat effective, but a slow release was required, and the imbalance was then cured and they went back to normal levels. the key to understanding bipolar in men is that they metabolize testosterone very rapidly into estrogen. the estrogenic dominance phase would then be marked as the "down time" or depression. stories of people chugging peppermint tea and then hitting deep depression are not uncommon, peppermint is effective at destroying testosterone.
however for the women - rather than increasing testosterone, peppermint or other testosterone-killers could potentially work to get balance back
back on testosterone: generally saturated fats are very good for testosterone, unsaturated fat would tend to decrease testosterone
mineral supplements can boost testosterone up to 30% each, vitamin D was as much as 80% boost
onion juice was in a iranian study on rats found to boost testosterone past 300%, but responsible chemical within is for now unknown
phytoandrogens (plant-testosterone) - this may move you from 600 to 1200 in testosterone
working out also boosts testosterone, staying cold and increasing blood flow to testosterone producing bodyparts can also help it
things that can destroy testosterone: hot showers, peppermint, liquirice, alcohol, amphetamines, estrogen, fluoride, unsaturated fats, sugar (not 100% on this one), aspartame, air fresherners, perfume, some plastics and stress
in regards of stress, ive personally talked to a man who developed bipolar from stress, poor childhood, traumatic workplace experiences and in my opinion it would seem obvious that the stress lowered his testosterone putting his brainchemistry off leading him to bipolar with his brain unable to get back to moderate testosterone levels
as for women and testosterone they actually need some testosterone to reproduce, too little of either testosterone and estrogen and it wont work out, mens reproductive system is of what ive come across entirely based on testosterone, estrogen doesnt do anything good for men. if you have a mental or physical problem - odds are you should get your hormones checked, doctors wont even take you seriously with a hormone test if youre clinically depressed! hormones are downright occult topic in regards to health.
