Has there been any important breakthroughs in AI apart from deep learning in the last 10 years?

Let's ask soothsayers about it.

Deep learning and breakthrough? I think it is sugar coating of old techniques used in neuroscience with mathematical part. For me, AI looks nothing more than hype now. I don't know why I ran behind this so called data science hype.

The only real breakthroughs are the technologies that are being developed to run these basically scripted "AIs" to do a behavior. The software side has been nothing but regurgitating old ideas into similar concepts with no real change other than "how long x algorithm takes to do this process". Until compression gets vastly better, we're probably going to be stuck where we're at until singularity eventually happens. Just my two cents.

It's quantam computing which I feel is the next big thing. I should probably trick my father to get me admitted into this new field of study once again.

Yeah, quantum computing seems to be the direction we're heading. Quite a few opportunities with that technology that we've yet to see.

I feel like the pure possibilities of quantum computing are just insane. I mean having the possibility of calculations done with the speed of a physical atomic shift is just insane, but really cool.
