APPAG is an all-party group of MPs and Peers in the Palace of Westminster with an interest in archaeology. The aim of APPAG is to further an understanding of archaeology in Parliament and promote archaeology and archaeological education. The group is co-chaired by the notable archaeologist Lord Renfrew of Kaimsthorn and Tim Loughton MP. Its Secretary is Lord Redesdale.
In 2002, following select committe style hearings held on 18 June, 25 June, 4 July, 11 July & 17 October, the Group prepared a landmark report on the state of British archaeology, following a call for submissions. A further review of the report's recommendations was undertaken some two years later.
In 2014 two members of the Group (John Howell MP and Lord Redesdale) were commissioned by the Culture Minister Ed Vaizey MP to undertake a review of local authority archaeology services. Submissions were received from a numbr of national and local archaeological organisations, as well as individuals with an interest in the matter. After a number of meetings with key respondents, a report was prepared and submitted to the Minister for consideration.
APPAG supports the proposals and objectives set out in Archaeology Enriches us All - The Archaeology Forum (TAF)'s manifesto for archaeology.
