If you were to Balkanize the United States, that is divide it into smaller countries based upon culture, religion, race, ideology, or any other such lines how would you do it? For me their is some obvious ones. The South, where I live is a distinct culture and nation which is different and diametrically opposed to the rest of the United States in various ways. It has its own strong national, cultural, and historic identity and should be a separate country. So I would have a southern nation composed of the states of South Carolina, Alabama, Georgia, Mississippi, Louisiana, Tennessee, Texas, Arkansas, Virginia, North Carolina, Kentucky, West Virginia, Oklahoma, North Florida, and the Ozarks of Missouri. New England is a second region which has a common cohesive identity, culture, and politics diametrically opposed to the South in every way so I'd create a country composed of the states of Massachusetts, Vermont, Connecticut, New Hampshire, Maine, and Rhode Island. Alaska would be given its independence as a separate country as well as Hawaii. The Republic of Lakota would become an official country. I'd give southern Florida to African Americans as their own country. The Appalachian Mountains in the southern nation would become its own state either independent or as an autonomous region in the new confederacy. California would be given its independence as a separate country. The Pacific Northwest bio region would become its own country called Cascadia of course. The City of New York would probably be given its independence as a city state. ...And I'm not quite sure about everything else.
Alternatively I'd just dissolve the federal government entirely and allow the state governments to form their own unions.

West Virginians are a bunch of traitors and confederate LARPers About half of West Virginians supported the confederacy during the war. Appalachia was divided in loyalty because they owned few slaves and weren't the biggest fan of plantation lords. It was a question of whether they hated the Yankees or the Lowland Aristocrats more. Anyways they're culturally southern in almost every conceivable way and they now identify with the south so I would include them in the southern republic.

Assuming I had to...
Easily the south, but probably also the West.
The South, it would mirror the CSA's borders, with the exception that I'd add Kentucky, possibly swapping it for Virginia in the process.
For the West, everything to the south and west of Montana (except Texas, if you're gonna be pedantic about that).
The South is the most obvious cultural divide in the US. There is a much smaller but still perceptible cultural difference between the East and West, so I hesitantly include that as well.
Another thing I considered was splitting a 'Midwest' from the North, but it would be landlocked, and also I'm far less sure on how I'd define the Eastern border.
Basically, there's no way I could happily divide it! xD

I'd give southern Florida to African Americans as their own country. I think it will be a backward country! Pure ghetto!

I'd give southern Florida to African Americans as their own country. I think it will be a backward country! Pure ghetto! Fast forward a century or two to “Black Florida” they can’t figure out how to rebuild the infrastructure, crime running rampant, low employment, people surviving off of social programs. It will regress into a third would country in no time.

That's probably true to be honest. Like the Dominican Republic for example! More like Detroit. I don't hate black people but they have some cultural pathologies they seriously have to work through.

The free states (the North), the slave states (the South) and the territories (the West) which led into the Pacific Coast. Below is a map. This actually maps to political boundaries pretty well.

Actually the above I think is a perfect way to Balkanize the United States. The countries would be. The United States of America: Maine, Rhode Island, Massachusetts, Vermont, New Hampshire, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Maryland, Delaware, California, Oregon, Washington, Hawaii. The Confederate States of America: Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Arkansas, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Georgia, Kentucky, West Virginia, Texas, Florida, Oklahoma, Missouri. The Western States of America: Kansas, Nebraska, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, Wyoming, Nevada, Colorado, Utah, Arizona, New Mexico, Idaho, Alaska Politically the north is more liberal/progressive/socialist, the south is more Christian/social conservative, and the West is more libertarian.
