Depressive realism is the hypothesis developed by Lauren Alloy and Lyn Yvonne Abramson that depressed individuals make more realistic inferences than do non-depressed individuals. Although depressed individuals are thought to have a negative cognitive bias that results in recurrent, negative automatic thoughts, maladaptive behaviors, and dysfunctional world beliefs, depressive realism argues not only that this negativity may reflect a more accurate appraisal of the world but also that non-depressed individuals appraisals are positively biased.
In short it is the proposition that people with depression have a more accurate perception of reality. It is linked with philosophical pessimism.
What are your thoughts on this?

It's true. They see the world with the right eyes basically which then gives them the negative perceptive when it comes to the future. I mean 1 in 6 Americans take antidepressants or something according to a study. ( www.nbcnews.com/health/health-news/one-6-americans-take-antidepressants-other-psychiatric-drugs-n695141 ) And I can say that compared to US and Canada life is easier in Canada in terms of healthcare and whatnot. And what's US known for? Mass murder? Well, no wonder there's 1 in 6 Americans not doing well. They see things as they are, a struggle as many other people do. I personally don't let it affect me negatively. Antidepressants is more money I don't need to waste

It's true. They come to more depressing conclusions about the world and they aren't naive. Kind of like the whole "ignorance is bliss" thing.

No, the pessimists are hostile to life (i.e. Schopenhauer, who lived in dread of death). It leads to defeatism and escapism.
The correct attitude to take when recognizing the ailing world is that of a Stoic or Nietzsche, to endure.
And teachers shouldn't be expected to live as they teach. Schopenhauer was a brilliant fella despite his faults.

Antidepressants is more money I don't need to waste Everyone is isolated, and many people whore themselves out and lose the emotional connection of romance and love... It is hard to find a good job, and life is more competitive than ever before. Purchasing power is really low relative to the past, and life just kind of sucks. Average salaries have massively stagnated. They have barely increased from the late 80s / 90s. House prices (at least in good locations) are climbing around 10-15% a year. Young people today being told by parents/teachers that degrees will allow you to have any job when in reality it doesnt.. Lots of jobs getting wiped out due to technology. All the kids being told that if you work hard anything is possible now they are realizing thats not the case. Crippling student debt. Little to no spare money for luxuries. People are living pay check to pay check. Also porn addictions, hormones in the food, posion tap water, polluted air, massive increase in sjw culture of mentally ill people clashing with the right wingers of this country. Gender/race conflict. Drug (particularly marijuana, pills, and heroin) epidemic. In conclusion things aren’t looking good.

Wow, it is very interesting, but it's not surprising for me personally. I'd say that if you can't handle with something, and this problem bothers you the most, so, either you try to solve it, or you accept unsolving characteristics of the problem. In each case, you fell uncomfortness and unsuccesfullness. But, in the other hand, if everthing is good - you're feel success or comfort, for example. But, does it mean that Reality link with 'success', 'comfort'?.. I think it is. But, there are two types of realities that we sometimes can't devide one from another (and this interesting feature presents in almost every surrealistics narratives - movies, arts, music...). So, one reality is normal. There you feel fresh air, singing birds, beautiful girls walking across the street, and music is coming from above... Another Reality has different principles. There you feel sick, no singing birds, no fresh air, and girls sarcasticly laugh at, and scretches are coming from everywhere... The last one Reality is a horror... But, why horror is so Realistic? What causes such Realistics?.. I think that in the 'reality' we are almost sleep, and being at 'Reality' we can't sleep at all, 'cause it's not normally to sleep feeling disgusting, pain and sorrow... ))

the face value of this claim is or could be true, but making " more realistic inferences" is not always a positive or a healthy thing to do. reality sometimes is hard and painful. it needs to be faced indirectly like the eye of the Sun on a hot day.

Exactly. Espeacially, if we're keeping in mind 'bout thesis: 'real - is not fully real' (i), we won't be sure about correct of the gotten image. 'Making more realistic' equals 'new facts can be added to the old ones without any contradictions' (ii). The question is 'at what precisely episode 'reallity' appears?' Fact+fact=a pair of facts, and it's not equal to Reality. Lots of facts - are the same (iii). If 'more realistic' depends on the quantity, so there is another question - what's the number?

we judge things according to the concepts we have about about them. sometimes the concepts we store in our minds are faulty or incomplete, accordingly our perception of reality is impaired.

we judge things according to the concepts we have about about them. sometimes the concepts we store in our minds are faulty or incomplete, accordingly our perception of reality is impaired. But even incomplete sentences we always use 'points' - . - so, some sentences we maintain as finished even if it has torn concepts. Most of our concepts are torn, but how can we ask 'bout their torn'ness? What exactly allows us to think 'bout it? I mean, if we have just one solid concept that hasn't been torn we'll be able to use it the system. We know such concepts - analytic sentences (or propositions). But, they are ideal. We can't really say that this ideal contains something naturally. So, here's the problem that's been arose by Kant, 'bout a priori synthetical judgements. But, as for me - it is not right position - to investigate similarities of the form of propositions and the World. The 'real' appears at the precise moment of differences of the nature and our imagines of it (or propositions...). So, 'for feeling the real is necessary to deal with 'evil''. By evil I understand hard occasions like 'stuck', 'not solvness' etc.
