Once the Antarctic Treaty wears off, a conflict of some kind will occur for sure, although I cannot say for certain if it will escalate into a Third World War. I see that as being unlikely.

One similar to which another user mentioned earlier. The Earth will slowly run out of Its fossil fuels, and tons of oil and other resources lay under the Antarctic Ice, waiting to be mined. The Worlds superpowers will scramble to take this land, and as their claims over Antarctica conflict, they will squabble with each other, until they place their militaries in Antarctica, escalating into a full on military conflict. The reason I see this conflict as being unlikely, is due to what these superpowers see- impending death and destruction that would ensue during a hypothetical third world war, significantly weakening all three nations, and likely leading to the destabilization and collapse of all, even the victor, who will barely come out on top. In this way it is likely that Antarctica will simply be split up, but I see at that if a third World War were to ever occur, it is buried under the frigid ice of Antarctica.

Alternative energy sources are coming out. And pig manure will soon be convertible into diesel fuel. There’s also a ton of fossil fuel in Canada and Alaska that hasn’t been touched yet. |

Alternative energy makes this scenario unlikely, although there is always the possibility that fossil fuel companies will significantly slow down the progress of it in the market. Also never heard of this pig manure to diesel stuff, sounds pretty damn cool. That said, oil being in Canada in Alaska could only further the conflict, since a scarcity of oil will lead to the nations hoarding it and keeping it to themselves, creating a conflict parallel to the United States and China in the Fallout Games.
All in all. I wouldn't hide under my bedsheets in fear of a Third World War. The chances seem astronomically low.

Don't think it impossible that you can have something slipped into your food, and then you 'fail the test'. Of course you protest your innocence. They all do. The difference with other wars is that its under the radar. Everyone looks away. "At least that's not me", they think. Even the sports doping is part of it. Its covert, subtle, most people endorse it. It ensures that corporate medication keeps its monopoly. And it is driven by superstition, fear, and scape-goating. Its impossible to properly evaluate how many have perished as typically those that are targeted, are 'illegal immigrants', the homeless, the unwanted. Those trenches in ww1 were not all that different really. Its just a way of culling. But its very easy for the prey to switch with the predator. |

I don't understand what you mean by "highly unlikely"- It's a real possibility for AIs to mess up and devastate the area or kill people, even in a minimal scale. |

People worry about it too much. I don't understand what you mean by "highly unlikely"- It's a real possibility for AIs to mess up and devastate the area or kill people, even in a minimal scale. What you two said reminded me of something. Some people think the world one day would be taken over by AI and if we don't do what they say then they'll easily kill us. Shrug I don't think people should make robots...but just saying. There's a chance something can go wrong. Technological difficulties do happen after all. |

So big metal contraptions, more powerful than us are going to kill thousands or millions of us every year, and we will be defenseless against them. This will go on for many decades. Many people will side with the mechanical beasts and prevent the ethical few from putting an end to their mechanical tyranny. They will take over our industries and our lives. People will slavishly devote themselves into worshiping these machines - even as they devour their children. Its called the motor car. |
