On the other hand, the cheapest form of pride is national pride; for the man affected therewith betrays a want of individual qualities of which he might be proud, since he would not otherwise resort to that which he shares with so many millions. The man who possesses outstanding personal qualities will rather see most clearly the faults of his own nation, for he has them constantly before his eyes. But every miserable fool, who has nothing in the world whereof he could be proud, resorts finally to being proud of the very nation to which he belongs. In this he finds compensation and is now ready and thankful to defend, … all the faults and follies peculiar to it.

I agree with his position on national pride however all forms of pride are cheap and dangerous. There is nothing one should be proud of. Pride is a state we should avoid.

Greatly written, as always with Schopenhauer, yet also a bit heartless. Why does he condemn those poor people, who actually need help?

Schopenhauer tried to say that we can't rely just on ourselves' ideas or kind of smth. Ideas always lead us into Abyss. Hegel was an ideologist rather than a philosopher (though there's no doubt that his system is brilliantly composed), so, Schopenhauer being opposed to Hegel thinks we need not to construct systems, but try to be more careful with ourselves, not letting some hidden destructive powers of ours to outside world.

I’d have to disagree. It is easy to see those that love their country as either misguided or blind, however there is nothing wrong with national pride. That is like saying one is blind to the faults of those they love. True love admits all facets of their objects of affection be that a signicant other or their country. For myself I will readily admit to the faults of America but see nothing but pride at serving her and loving her

Is that right?

Is that right? I'm not so sure that even forgive is the right word. Forgive has the connotations that we just let them go. I'm talking about full embracement of those faults and acknowledgement that we need to find a remedy of them. If I wasn't clear on that point it's my mistake.

No, I think it is 'to forgive' and it is the right word. There could not be full embracement just 'cause it would mean to forget the past. Should we forget our past?

Schopenhauer was undoubtedly brilliant, but he wasn't a guide or pioneer for humanity. His sharp analytical mind was stunted by his pessimism, egotism, embrace of pity, fear of death, etc. His attitude towards life was overall negative and he recognized this deficiency. In this connection, it should be stressed that teachers should not be expected to adhere to their own teachings. Teachers like Jesus are rare exceptions.
Simply put, a nation deprived of it's pride has lost it's vitality, has given up it's rights for existence.
Why are there so many admonitions against pride in the Old Testament? Because the Jews themselves were prone to being prideful, to compensate for the degrading complexes they were inculcated with.
