What is a soul/Spirit?
How can we clearly define and describe a spirit?

Wikipedia:
A spirit is a supernatural being, often but not exclusively a non-physical entity; such as a ghost, fairy, or angel.[1] The concepts of a person's spirit and soul, often also overlap, as both are either contrasted with or given ontological priority over the body and both are believed to survive bodily death in some religions,[2] and "spirit" can also have the sense of "ghost", i.e. a manifestation of the spirit of a deceased person. In English Bibles, "the Spirit" (with a capital "S"), specifically denotes the Holy Spirit.

Philosopher Plotinus gave some deep insights on this question in his metaphysics (the very beginning of Enneads I, for example). You can take a simplified presentation of his ideas on Wikipedia: Plotinus on WikipediaIn tradition, purely spiritual creatures such as Angels are believed to have no emotions, so you can start thinking about spirit as the level of consciousness which is above emotions, similar to what Elizabeth said. This brings to mind Buddha's Nirvana, for example, so you can continue to read basics of Buddha's teaching on Nirvana.

I think it's not necessary to search the spirit and make some special practics like mistagogies (Plotinian's ones), but rather have a look around and take a look into the mirror. We are people - claiming it we're arguing for spirit's presence. Everything is made by made - it is a spiritual work. Yes, a part of this work was made by our 'animal' side, not intelligence. According to Hegel - the only something really made by virtue and intelligence is humanity achievement. So, if I found a gravestone or discovered a sign that was left by man's hand - I've already found a spirit.
