I am not exactly sure if they're called sects or denominations or whatever. But I wasn't aware that there were divisions in Islam as in Christianity until recently.
So before I asked my question I want to explain how this question was formed first. I was told that Muslims dislike the Christian bible because it has been rewritten so many times and they think the real meaning is lost and that's why they think we have many denominations in Christianity (which isn't the case at all). So, if the Quran was written perfectly unlike the bible and preserved well unlike the bible (as they claim, of course).
So, why do you have denomations and sects too like Christians? My answer to it is the bible and Quran say only one thing whether rewritten or not but people just like to form their own sects from the origional way of following what it says to do in their holy book. Shrug

Truth is of a dynamic nature, and is not static. This is how I interpret the evolution of the Sufi, Ahmediyya sects in time and space. Same goes for the Bahai religion which came later on.
The shia and sunni sects origin however seems to be of political nature, and has nothing to do with the teachings of the quran. This could be the reason for the intersectarian violence between the two. Why won't they change what they call themselves since they don't follow the teaching? It gives a false impression.
The Shias and Sunnis don't follow the teachings of islam which insist on peace and nonviolence and violence only for the sake of defence. I see them as political entities and nothing else as stated earlier.
It is the same with Catholics and protestants who claim to follow the teachings of Christ, but have had tremondous intersectarian violence between themselves as well.
There is an insightful saying of Mahatma Gandhi in this regard, " Satan's greatest successes are when he has the name of God on his lips."
Spirituality is really an individual thing, but when it becomes organised, it is doomed to descend to politics and all its consequent mayhem and chaos.
