So obviously, all knifes should be banned then? I think I said this in the last thread like this, but you can't just say something is bad because of an abnormal deviation from the standard. Besides that, I doubt this happened just because of a video game. There had to have been some kind of affliction, or mental health issues leading to this. People don't just cut their heads off. If we banned everything that led to suicides, people would find new reasons and ways to kill themselves. Suicides have been happening since the beginning. Umm no. Knives are used for cutting food as scissors are used for cutting paper. They're tools for living. I didn't mean that literally, I was just saying that as a counter argument. All I'm saying is, people have died over TONS of things, that doesn't mean we should ban everything that led to those deaths, because it wouldn't solve the problem.

Remember when that dude shot Reagan because he was in love with Jodie Foster after seeing that movie... I forget what its name was? Are we going to ban movies because one dude shot the president one time after seeing one?

I think she raises a good point though; what purpose do video games serve that we actually need them in our daily lives that knives, cars, chainsaws, under-the-counter chemicals, ropes, etc. don't?

What purpose does any form of art serve though? Should we ban art because it serves no utilitarian purpose and sometimes inspires men to do bad things? I refer to that guy shooting the president after seeing... TAXI DRIVER! That's what it was. Guy didn't know that Jodie Foster was a rug muncher.

Well, that depends on if video games are considered solely works of art. And I wasn't saying ban all things that serve no utilitarian purpose, but that we shouldn't ban the things that do serve a purpose.

I honestly don't think you could ban video games. I think people need to be better educated or helped when they need help. Parents need to be responsible and not let their kids play games that will influence them. For example, when I was a kid, my parents got me Street Fight for Sega Genesis. Soon I found myself trying to mimic the moves the characters were doing in the game and that eventually led to me trying those moves out on my younger sister, which resulted in my parents taking away Street Fighter.

Yeah. They're not getting this. Video games aren't needed for living at all. Tools are, and jobs, food, etc.

Being an artist is a job which people need in order to live. Artists come in many forms like as designers for building a house or designers who make clothing and so on. But it's a job people need. No, I am talking about art that does not serve a utilitarian purpose. A painting, a movie, sculpture, music, fiction books. If you were to ban all these forms of art and entertainment because they serve no purpose other than the same purpose which a video game serves, to delight the senses, then we would be living in a boring soulless world. Banning these things because they inspire certain unhinged people to do evil things robs the majority of sane people of the enjoyment of these things. This is Puritanism plain and simple. Also video game designers are a job that people do to make a living as well.

I love Christian music for one and some people find Jesus through Christian radios where they sing and stuff. And movies help spread it to adults and children. I watched lots of Christian stuff for kids when young. Like birth of Jesus and so on. And paintings or drawings in kid's bibles help the kids better understand Christianity. All these are careers of art. And that's what God entended them to be used for with any gifts we may have in spreading the gospel.

What can we do to stop this from happening? Should we ban video games?
