This is a riddle from the Konami game "Silent Hill 3" (2003)
Imagine you've got only two options:
a) to bring (give) pain, or
b) to receive pain
What do you prefer?
But don't be so rushy, because there's another proviso that no matter what answer one chooses the result will be what the one hates the most. Which means that our preferences usually depends on what do we like, but sometimes we have to view another routes or abilities in us, to try to get the better result.

which could be either depending on the situation.
This is akin to selecting the most interesting story line.
So, for example, being Darth Vader is paradoxically good
because it makes for a creative narrative.
So the decision to choose one's own suffering or those of
the others, is simply a matter of what makes for the
better poetry.
This is of course, under the conditions that you set,
that either result is bad personally.

Being extremely weird on one hand, it [evil, suffering] allows narrative to get dressed into the proper contour for a narrator to create a story. Do you support the view that the universe is more life, than just a gathering of different elements? Or that the universe has some kind of a storyline, or maybe many storylines? |

The Universal Consciousness goes to great lengths to hide its awareness, to appear as just a gathering of different elements.
Storyline is the evolution of karma. That emotion is more real than any physics, whether that be real physics, or the academic variation.
This can be seen most clearly when the academics
stubbornly cling to their black-holes and relativities, their big bangs and and einsteins;
all of which are childish hocus-pocus easily disproven, so the only reasons they are adhered to are emotional;
a clinging to a scholastic ritual of humiliation before the naked emperors of academia...
aka cannon fodder.

Considering identity requires a connection if I hurt myself I hurt others, if I hurt others I hurt myself. What you chose doesn't matter as everyone gets some pain. |

Everyone and some isn't the same, however, you're right, either way a human is being hurt |
