I'll guess, from that text, that Socrates didn't believe that the sun and moon were gods, but didn't want to state that directly since it would be intolerable to most Athenians.

I'll guess, from that text, that Socrates didn't believe that the sun and moon were gods, but didn't want to state that directly since it would be intolerable to most Athenians. Right,
so the charge of 'subverting the youth' being implied is that without god(s) there are no morals. But we read in the text, Socrates referring to 'The God', which is monotheistic. He is going against the old gods here.
So as much as he is positioning himself as perhaps Jewish, he is also asking for proper 'scientific' observation. Or is he expressing a more Vedic position with the idea of gods being implicit in The God?
After all, the typical charge of Hindians* being pagans is itself a false one. And the lesser gods taking the place of angels, is pretty much a semantic difference.
But most vitally, Socrates finds himself on all sides with enemies as he simply questions the assumptions and bold opinions of others. The more we pursue truth, the more falsehood rails against us with all its insidious claims.
------- * as opposed to 'Injuns' - my terminology, and no apologies for it, neither.

For being an atheist? Perhaps, I passed something. Sometimes to concentrate isn't easy for me. Sorry, if I passed something important away.
About twelve years ago I read in first time Plato's "Socrate's Apology". Was impressed.

Socrates was killed for speculating that the moon was made of earth, and not a 'god', and the sun was made of rock - this was considered 'blasphemy' of a sort.
Socrates is in essence the first real Astronomer / Astrophysicist. Of course the problem is now that ALL religion is going to be blamed...
and thus Socrates is in essence, the same inverted Archetype as Jesus.
