Often (not always though) many Christians refuse materialism, and the matter, as something demonic. It doesn't seem to be true. Christ ate fish, and drank vine, and ate bread, so his followers too. Besides, there were no objection to matter in Bible. Yes, there were agnostics who twisted the teaching of Christianity, but it was not a Christianity not then, not today. I think it's possible for a Christian to believe in materialism, thinkig that matter as the most reliable explanations for many things. But it doesn't mean a materialist cannot belive in anything spiritual. Moreover, there is nothing to debate, because as matter so spirits are created by God. So, if God wishes matter to be the reason - so it be; if anything spiritual - so it be. Additionally to it we should not forget that this world is occupied by evil since Adam&Eve's fall, that is why no surprising to see here things of made exclusively by matter. I would compare this state of affairs with the tragedy of the monster Frankenstein: he's been made by a human from dead flesh, but he (the monster) had purely good human intentions. He wanted to obtain a human look, and live among people. (I'm talking about Merry Shelley's novel, not 1931's movie.)
