I don't believe in determinism, however even if we don't live in strictly cause-relation world this doesn't mean we can change our future. There may be some forces or something that barriers or struggles it. And any of our tries won't work exactly because any of our attempts may have the opposite effect. Well, the life itself is difficult and too sneaky to let a human dictates his own rules for reality. At least not we are the ones who have set those rules on - the rules of the universe, and maybe that what mankind is about is to play inside this universe game.
But there are more optimistic ways. Even we cannot change future, doesn't mean we have to take part in anything that the reality proposes us. If we could separate from reality and live our lives not directly within it, we might set our own rules - exactly as we used to do with our imagination. Many writers, poets, artists, composers, directors, and so on tried to create the world that were unchained from the present one. Their attempts were different, nevertheless many of them still play a major role in our life via our participating them. Maybe people try to set their own universe using the resources of this universe? Who knows.
