Have you ever noticed why in Eastern Europe churches are so many saints? Catholic Church have also got many saints, but it seems that the respect or worship of them in Catholics and Orthodoxy is really different. If you've got it, it is very good, because another think you need to add here is the historical past. Many celebrations, holidays, etc in Christianity were pagan firstly. This isn't a secret, and in many regions all over the world the yesterday's cultes turned into Christian ones (or Islam ones, etc).
The same in Ukraine. I don't know how greater that role was, but taking this into account can give one of keys to understand why Ukraine is not holding the view that russians or some others (including Americans) hold. Which one? - The main saint principle.
Unlike Americans, Ukrainians allow their president may not be a saint. Of course, if a president does horrible things as Putin, or he openly does rough, inhumane things - he will not stay a president anymore. But if he's got some faults or mistakes - it's not a very big deal. But why on Earth those mistakes have no such a resonanse? I am going to explain it.
My personal opinion, because as you may know, such things are not solid and firm as Physics laws, is that the cult of Heroes is not less actual as a president one. Let me explain it using some recent history: in 2014 in Ukraine there was a civil revolution, when the govt of Yanukovich went away. And one of the reason why this happened was not a fault of the mistake of that Yanukovich my himself; no, - many of his followers were in govt, and the number of heroes, presented there in govt, were critically diminished. You got it?
Along with a president there have to be another people - in regions (as governors, or ministers), or in the parliament. And for Ukrainians it is very important to have Heroes here and there (including, of course, a president), then to have one saint in a president chair.
We do not knee our president or any others in our govt, but we respect and glorify our Heroes at their chairs. I mean, for instance, such governers as Klichko bros, Vitaliy Kim the governer of Nicolaev, the colonel Arestovich, and so on, including many ones battle heroes of our army, and so on - all of them, plus, the volunteers, the medical workers, the firemen, and many others - are our heroes, and we glorify or respect them not less, than a president.
So, that is why if someone would try to blame Ukrainians for possible mistakes of their president would be quite far far away from the truth. And this principle is one of the main one in our culture. And someone cannot just step into a country demanding his own rules and own culture. A culture must be respected if and only if this is not a culture of terrorism, murdering, genocide and so on.
Russian culture is closer to American, but unlike the latters, the formers can excuse his president any of his faults, murders, crimes, whatsoever. They would knee in front of him, because, as Americans, they glorify their president. But!! Americans never knee in front of their president; as I understand, Americans want see his president be perfect, as a saint. He must be an ideal.
Ukrainians prefer heroes to leaders, and that's why the role of the president is always in a shadow of the role of the parliament or other politicians, activists, or other ones who try to make some important changes. And I think Americans also like heroes, it can be clearly seen of their love to the heroes from comics, or others. Must say, I don't know very well about this fact, while I am sure this is an important cultural position.
Here I viewed briefly only three cultures. It is not a very good analysis, plus, I had to add many other important cultures, as, for instance, a Poland ones, because Polish people as Ukrainians are wishing for freedom as a key, primary fact, which is also true for many Europeans, and of course, Americans. I had to add African cultures, because there are many ones which are indeed true democratic ones, and the life of them are natural and harmony. I know that in Japan the cult of Heroes is also almost at the top, but at the same time Japanese respect and glorify their Emperor.
As a brief addition: cultures are different, and even politics cannot be compared just like that. The regional or geographical differences must have been included as a fact for comparement. And we may find as difference, so similarities between many cultures if we would try to dig better into this question.
