I see no problem with emulators for as long as one is using the original controllers or the equivalent. Otherwise, like using keyboard for old Mario games, I don't approve unless one can demonstrate that it's not an advantage. It's fine for one's own amusement, but there should be an even playing field in any competition, and trying to get the fastest time is a form of competition.
