Ok so like I got myself a chromebook like a year ago when I realized that I didn't remember where I put my laptop . Anywayyyy....this thing is confusing. I wanted to watch dvds on it and just plugged in a dvd player since the chromebook doesn't have one. It told me that I need an app to play the files. Do I buy something? What is this annoying thing still in my way from watching stuff? . I got my snacks out and was ready for a good watch before bed and now my snacks and I are just left staring at each other. Can this thing even play anything? Help, tech people!

1. Does this laptop have a media player such as: - Windows Media Player
- VLC
- MX player
No-----> Google one of the above 3, (I recommend VLC) and after installation see if that fixes your issue. 2. Is the external DVD player something like a Toshiba, Sony, Acer external drive? And buy that what I mean is did you buy it somewhere such as Newegg or another PC shop? Yes! - It may be lacking the neccesary firmware or updated drivers to be used. If you believe that is the case, google the make and model along with drivers or firmware and you should find what you need.
NO-----> I bought it somewhere like Bestbuy or Walmart where DVD players are sold. In that case it should work normally. Sometimes you need to restart a PC/Laptop after connecting it via usb. - While the device is plugged into your laptop restart it.
Did that fix the issue? No-----> I'm out of ideas and you'll need to screen shot the image and post it here. To do that press and hold the WINDOWS key and press PRNT SCR at the same time. It will make a copy of that image and place it on your clipboard. You can then just paste that image anywhere you'd like, save it, upload it somewhere like Imgur etc. After that share it here and tag me so I can help you.

I'm guessing it has no media player because... 1. It had no dvd/cd drive and 2...nothing played when I attached one. So I'll try the VLC you suggested. And no the external drive that was bought was from Amazon. It's not one of the brand ones you mentioned. I'll post a pic of it and what my screen says later if getting the VLC and/or using your steps was confusing or something that way everyone sees what I'm dealing with to give more info. But thank you for that information. It's very detailed so I hope I can get it resolved today!

It doesn't work I got the VLC player and put in my dvd. And it just opens it and does nothing else. It just stays on this page. And can't be the drives fault because it's new and lights up and everything. This is the external drive. And the external drive does play dvds. Sigh. This is why I use phones mostly. Computers don't like me!

Elizabeth Right click on the file once the external DVD player loads it, click on "open with" and then select VLC.

I tried right clicking and there was no list of options. I downloaded even more media players and tried the right click and no options came up but just a link to chrome store to get something that'll play it. I think ima give up now.
