FUCK (most) LOOTBOXES
The idea behind them is truly to rake in cash to continue development of todays "New" games which in reality are just polished Alphas.
My best friend is the definition of a whale if you don't stop him.
Take for instance a few years ago we were playing Guild Wars 2 and I made the mistake of introducing him to the Ecto rat. For those unaware Ecto is a material/currency collected by breaking down gear in game. Ecto also carries a fairly high price on the ingame open market when compared to the value of said gear. Next thing I know my buddy a few days later has spent a couple hundred real world dollars on normal ingame currency, to purchase gear on the market, to than break down into Ecto and gamble away just to earn back about $50 worth of currency...
The only reason I even showed him this crap was to show him how to potentially make more ingame gold from his useless underpowered gear collected from farming...
But this same dude will buy loot boxes like they're going out of style then drop a game when he doesn't get what he wants.
CS:Go Rocket League Apex Legends
Are all games he put in maybe 10 hours of real life time and somewhere between $200-$750 of real life cash.
They aren't surprise mechanics.
The only way I would be 100% ok with loot boxes is if there was a weekly purchase limit put on all accounts regardless of age, it's strictly cosmetic, and that at somepoint you can purchase said item standalone for a REASONABLE price (looking at you APEX.)
