Can't they have other definitions as well? Like conscious=alive and unconscious=dead A living body is always conscious because it has the ability to think, feel, etc. Even one that's asleep. One may not have felt someone's touch while asleep but the concious living body felt it despite you being aware of it yourself. Like blood is alwaye moving throughout your body because body is alive yet you can't feel that. But I guess we can define conscious and unconscious different ways. According do Jen I'm only half conscious probably being half asleep Shrug

Unconsciousness here is related to deep involvement in one's thoughts and corresponding emotions to the point of missing reality as it is.
I know of a fanatic fan of a sports team, depressed by its failure in a certain match, who shot himself dead. The guy identified with the team to the extent that its failure created corresponding thoughts and emotions of depression leading to his suicide.
Similarly there are people who had died in cinema theatres suffering heart attacks due to too much emotional involvement with the characters in the movie , especially in times of distress and tension.
Obviously such incidents are totally unnecessary, and are symbolic of unconsciousness due to belief systems, conditioning and inability to detach from the mental stream of thoughts and emotions that flood the mind due to external stimuli or due to impact of past memories.
Practice of present moment awareness, emphasized in all religions, enables one to detach from blind involvement in one's thoughts and emotions, and have a balanced and realistic perspective to each situation without emotional distortions.
