I remember reading in Malcolm Gladwell's book "Outliers: The Story of Success" about how culture effects our behavior. He described this one study, " Insult, Aggression, and the Southern Culture of Honor" which took place at the University of Michigan in 1999. The researchers wanted to see if Southern men (mostly from the states of Georgia and Alabama) were more aggressive compared to Northern and Western guys. The hypothesis was that because the South had such a strong code of honor, a Southern man would become more aggressive due to an insult. So the researchers decided to come up with one experiment in which they would have these students take a fake test, and lead them to a room to turn it in. An actor would bump into them the hallway, call them an asshole, then have the participants come back to take another test. The Northern guys didn't get that upset, in fact most of them were just amused at such a random encounter. But Southern guys were fuming! The post tests showed they released more testosterone, their handshakes were firmer, and their adrenaline was pumping. The researchers did another experiment, where they had the same scenario, except on the way back to the testing room, they had one of the bouncers from a local night club walk in the path of the students, and the testers measured how far away the students were from the bouncer before they moved out of the way. The Northern guys were timid, they moved away within 6-9ft of bouncer. The Southern guys were so pissed off that they got right into the bouncer's face, moving away from 3 to 1 foot! I thought this was just hilarious. Do you know any funny experiments? Doesn't have to be psychology related, it can be in any field.

I wonder, though, if this specifically is actually a rural/urban culture divide instead of a south/north divide.

I remember back at the university, a professor of Psychology held a lecture for all Psychology students about hypnosis, and in his introduction he talked about some ethical issues about it and that only licensed clinicians should use it. One of the students asked for a chance to speak and he repudiated the idea of hypnosis claiming that it is nonesense and that no power in the world could control his will and he defied the professor if he really meant what he said about the so called hypnosis,he was ready to be the subject of experiment for the professor and if the professor could hypnotize him, he could do whatever he liked with him. The professor accepted the challenge, hypnotized him and asked the group what they suggested he should do with him. They answered " ask him who he loves " a scandalizing question to which he readily answered that he loved his mother and he named her, and also a female distant cousin of his and he also named her..the group were laughing and they started taking turns making fun of him, but within reasonable limits. When he woke up from the hypnosis he had to face the serious problem of announcing the love of a girl to all, and according to our culture you should either go directly and propose to the girl or your love would be taken to mean a bad thing. Of course the only choice he had was to go and ask her hand in marriage but that was complicated also. He was only a second year university student and he needed some seven or eight years before he could be able to take any serious measures in that respect. Any way he met the girl's family who had not heard of his famous public announcement for his love to their daughter. they thanked him and told him he had to finish his education first.

Any way he met the girl's family who had not heard of his famous public announcement for his love to their daughter. they thanked him and told him he had to finish his education first. I guess it worked out for him . For me, it's not that hypnosis isn't a thing, it's just not very effective for therapy because our memories can easily be fabricated simply by suggestion. Also, people can be hypnotized if they believe in hypnosis in the first place, which means that guy did want to believe in hypnosis. That reminds me of a story about my Professor in Psychology of Human Sexuality. He was explaining why he doesn't do projects, and it's because a group of students brought in this women in a trench coat, and this other guy in plains clothes, then they started to play music and they both started to strip. My professor yelled at them "What the hell are you doing!" And got campus security to escort the group out. Another time this girl brought in all her dildos and started to explain what parts of the vagina they stimulated. That guy has so many crazy stories and he was such a cool guy.

I wonder, though, if this specifically is actually a rural/urban culture divide instead of a south/north divide. The study mentions where all the participants are from, and most of the Southern guys actually come from cities in Alabama and Georgia. Also looking historically back, there have been court cases where the jury found murderers not guilty if they were a case of the victim insulting the murderer.
