Hurray jingle bells time. Wishing members MERRY CHRISTMAS How do you celebrate Christmas!? I was always curious to know how people in India treat this! In India, christians are not how it is in europe. Most of them are converted tribal, and also, the mainstream india bans it, because of hindutva. North of India, such as new delhi, rajasthan, gujrat have strong anti christian bias, and the RSS actually kill many pastors also, by making false claims that these people are converting hindus. Hindus fight mostly communal violence, and bring issues like beef eating, conversion, calling the hindu gods as myths etc. Corporates do celebrate christmas, playing secret santa, distributing gifts, plum cake. But, it is just an imitation, and people don't take it seriously. Otherwise, BOXING DAY is supposed to be a day of showing sympathy towards those who are less fortunate. Majority of Indians are well to do middle class people, and they have hardly any concern towards the realities of life, as long as they get their fat pay cheques. For them, 25th december is another day of gregorian calendar. Can't help, Indians are not evolved people. Before britishers, the original christians were here, mostly from roman catholic , portugese migrants and italy. Then, there were anglo indians too. They used to celebrate christmas. In mangalore, christmas is celebrated as it is done in europe, same manner, wining, going to sermon, attending choir. Now, most of the people who are entering christianity are mostly tribal converts, not aristocrats. I have studied in an anglo school for 3 years , there, they used to celebrate christmas propely, distributing plum cakes. That was proper christmas and 31st december culturally. Unfortunately, due to rise of hindutva natinoalism these anglo schools were declared as ENEMY of nation, and all such european schools have been shut down in India, forever!!!!

But as far as I remember, I think, my grandfather was geting opportunity to become Priest of a church, because, anglo brit officers were on very good terms. In the entire village, my grandfather and his elder brother were allowed to meet them.

In fact, christians never posed any problems in India, the real ones, and the european migrants also tried to teach some culture and manners to these people, like family gathering, remembering the lord's name before eating meals as we are fortunate due to his grace, and also, serving the less fortunate.
The real problem are these upper caste elites of India, who are destroying everything.

Goa was another place where portugese - goan/western coastal local girls mated people were there, so they too were roman catholic. Indian expansionism actually invaded goa, and is now under their jurisdiction, though was declared an UNION TERRITORY, but the present CHIEF MINISTER OF GOA is a BJP person, party whose mainstream ideology is hindutva en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Annexation_of_Goa

BTW, I drank whisky, a small one.
At a boiled egg, and a half boiled omlette, and smoked 3 cigarttes.
So I have celebrated CHRISTMAS properly and fruitfully.

I won't claim to be an expert in the history of India at all, so I hope nothing I may say in ignorance comes across as trying to invalidate your points. Adding to what you have commented on, one could argue that the British did not do much to put christians in a favorable light prior to independence. As for the upper caste elites. I do actually have a small amount of experience with that and can see what you mean. I have a colleague in my department who is from India. He actually still believes in the caste system. After learning about my distant Indian heritage he started acting a lot more friendly to me because as he put it, I "come from a good caste". Though it may not have been a negative experience, I wonder how he would have responded if those ancestors had been from a lower caste. I certainly don't personally like idea that someone has a pre-ordained role in the world. And very much don't agree with the idea that crossing those boundaries could invoke responses a violent as killing someone, which I understand does still happen on rare occasion.

I always was more inclined towards christianity, but due to fear did not.
In fact, we have been brainwashed to this extent that even I used to hate.
There is a huge anti christian sentiment in India.
But, good that I am talking with people, so my mind is getting opened.
