I have often mused that such deserts occur because humans kill off the predators, and that leaves nothing to cull the herds, which then decimate the flora.

When the Nile had been discovered and sooner the civilizaton of Egypt began to spread, how many killings and sacrafices they made? It was milliards if not more. The humanity doesn't change. It's all the same. As Shlomo said: "There's nothing new under the Sun", so do it now.

Of course it may just have been the elephants that killed the predators, or something else that itself died out.
