Insightful article by female enlightened master Jan Frazier on being conscious (aware) and unconscious....
All thought have its source in past memories, and when thought dominates the present moment experience to the exclusion of everything else, one is allowing the past to contaminate the present experience, and make it stale.
In awareness or pure consciousness, one sees reality as it is without the intrusion of the past, and thus perceives each situation afresh, without our likes and dislikes due to past memories getting in the way distorting the experience.

What about infants? Are they living within unconsciousness = evil?
Sometimes consciousness is so terrible and scary, that to loose mind is a safety for us. As Lovecraft said: "The most merciful thing in the world, I think, is the inability of the human mind to correlate all its contents. We live on a placid island of ignorance in the midst of black seas of the infinity, and it was not meant that we should voyage far". (The Call of Cthulhu 2:2-14)
My friend is the unconsciousness. Anything consciousness is trying to capture me in its iron hamds, and lock me within metal bars of crystal rationality. A living thing is never about anything metal. The metal is our death, the death to our bionic living lives. The metal is what must bear the name of the evilest evil for the masterpiece called the human.
The metal is what brought us all those wars, scars, spurs, nerves, gores, and remorse. A human had terribly mistaken for choosing not the right planet to live. The metal - that oozy evilish substance - had ruined everything by trying to merge itself with a human nature.
Do you think a human cannot live without an iron? Or a rock? - Human is the one who is able to handle with the universe without any pathetic substance. But the rocks amd then the metal started conquering us all. That was where the end of ours had begun.

What about infants? Are they living within unconsciousness = evil? As per yogis, infants are said to be living in present moment awareness, just like dogs and cats. That is why Jesus stated that one ought to be like a little child to enter the kingdom of heaven. It just means to be in present moment awareness. Jesus had also praised the lilies in the field, considering them to be more glorious than Solomon in his majesty. Similarly Nataraja Guru, a yogic master had stated thus, "When a beautiful fat housecat rolls in the sunlight, that is yoga."
The consciousness I am mentioning here is awareness or pure consciousness free from intense desires in the form of cravings and aversions. Such intense desires force the mind to be in the past or future through incessant thinking and emoting, thereby missing present moment awareness. This is also productive of psychological pain, as it is an unnatural state. The state of present moment awareness ( like in children or animals or nature) is the natural state which is characteristic of bliss and peace. This is why present moment awareness or mindfulness is given a lot of importance in western psychiatry and therapy these days. www.psychiatrictimes.com/view/mindfulnessen.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mindfulness As children grow up, they start having conditioned desires for this and that, misinterpreting pleasure for happiness. But the happiness they derive from achieving their desire is just the cessation of desire for the time being, till a new desire is taken up. A desire arises in the mind. It is satisfied immediately another comes. In the interval which separates two desires a perfect calm reigns in the mind. It is at this moment freed from all thought, love or hate. Complete peace equally reigns between two mental waves.~ Swami Sivananda One must reason and know one's duties and have goals for progress, but there is no need to have strong cravings for them. Cravings only make the mind feverish and ruin present moment awareness and peace of mind. A peaceful mind is productive in work, and is good for physical health as well. Karma Yoga is defined as understanding one's duties at any given moment, and bringing practical application to them without desire for the results, so that the mind is peaceful and focussed. If the mind is always bothered about the results, it will be anxious and not be able to do justice to the work at hand presently, and thereby result in poor productivity.
Proper attention to the means will ensure that the results will be of good quality.

The unconscious mind is that which is stuck in incessant thinking and emoting, due to its strong desires of cravings and aversions. When you have strong desires, you will be thinking of past or future , past memories and future imagination, most of the time.
As this is a painful state, many people take alcohol or drugs to become totally unconscious so that the ego-mind is totally empty for the time-being. This brings a lot of relief to some. But this is only a temporary state with unpleasant hangovers or side-effects later on.
