Not sure how much research you all have put into this subject but I have found that the side effects can be good or bad. This can be because of the type of religion/belief one has chosen, how dedicated they are to it, and how they adopted this religion/belief.
1. Type of Religion/Belief
Some choose one carefully and those usually are satisfied with their choice and see positive results from it. I would put myself into this category. Others may just try a religion out just to see how it is or they follow someone else's footsteps to trying one whether by force or free will. This means that if by force they may not want to at all or they grew up in it and family won't let them leave it. I spoke with some of these and learned that some literally had to run away from home and leave their family to escape it. This is a negative result and can be detrimental to one's health. Some just try it for fun on their own free will and realize it was a good atmosphere or a bad atmosphere. A good example of this would be when I read some stories online of people who escaped the Jim Jones (that's his name right?) cult. She was saying that after a while the place she joined didn't feel right or safe so she wanted out as soon as possible. This was a bad choice to join the cult that came with a positive happy ending from getting out of the cult otherwise it could have been a detrimental end that the others faced in her case.
2. Dedication
Some who choose a religion may or not be dedicated to it. Those who are dedicated to it are sincere in following it to perfection. The people can either have a good or bad outcome depending on the type of religion they follow. Like mine had a positive ending since I'm safe in it and it brings no harm. Others like those mentioned in the cult above were so dedicated to it that they followed the wrong thing and died. They followed a religion of death basically and not of life. The others who are not dedicated to a religion will not bother with it which seem smarter to me than those who pick a religion yet forget about following it. It's like getting a dog but forgetting they have it and the dog slowly dies from not being fed and given attention. It's like don't get a dog in the first place. So those who don't dedicate themselves to a religion and don't bother with it are smart because they actually go after what they want and are sincere in their choices. The others who pick a religion but don't dedicate to it are those who don't know what they want in life which are people to steer away from. Definitely, don't marry them because they don't know if they want a marriage or not in reality so you'll be setting yourself up for a future of problems.
3. How they adopted their religion/faith
There's several examples that I've read on this so not sure if I'll remember to mention them all. However, usually those who are in a bad situation like jail, drug addiction, cancer, and so on tend to benefit when they find a religion especially if it's one with a positive result from beginning to end. Those will then stick to it and better their lives. If their choice doesn't have a positive result from beginning to end then they will struggle on and off sometimes with same problem or new ones. But those with a mental illness are encouraged to seek religion to cope and get better overall. However, some can develop a mental illness from a religion. That's why it's important to be careful what you get yourself into. I definitely think it can be bad for anyone involved if one developes a mental illness from a religion. Your life can become endangered when you're around such like the people who followed that cult leader who clearly developed an illness. But yeah if one's going off crazy and can't be reasoned with at all then best to stay clear.
Note: Those going off crazy may or may not be religious so let's not assume it's because of religion. Religion can be good but not for everyone just like peanuts are good for me and can kill someone allergic to them. Peanuts are not evil (quite heavenly in chocolate actually) and neither is religion evil. Everyone just has a different reaction to things even to math. I have some students who have no issues solving equations...and then the one that sees the worksheet and goes into a rage, destroys the paper, and tosses it across the room.
