Bernard Shaw observes in the preface to "Pygmalion" that is impossible for an Englishman to open his mouth without making some other Englishman despise him". Do you agree with this statement?

Polaris , No one can please everyone all the time. KGrim, the accent one uses reflects one's social and geographical background, and accordingly it might expose him to negative judgement and bias from the speakers of a more privileged accent.

In America, the two accents that get the most scorn are the black African American accent and dialect and the southern accent and dialects. Speak either and most assume you are unintelligent.

That's true, and that's why in Bernard Shaw's "Pygmalion", the flower street seller who speaks some common dialect realizes that in order for her to settle in a job in one of the big flower shops she has to learn to speak like a gentlewoman. She goes to a professor of Linguistic to teach her the high class society accent and etiquette.
