What do you mean by need? Like why do we need to celebrate it or what is needed to celebrate it?

Christmas is as well for recreation, rest and progressing our cognitive and social performance in the darkest time of the year when traditionally the material work activities are reasonable to suspend for the natural circumstances. This is as well the time to consume and share what was stored during the autumn harvest (valid figuratively as well). The sunshine turns to increase making an analogy to increasing cognitive enlightment by Jesus' influence contrary to the ancient superstitious darkness.

I would like to offer a two-part answer.
First, Christmas is a Christian faith holy day and therefore the 'need' for it would be dictated by the faith and the rites/beliefs associated with it - much as every faith has their special, celebratory and holy days.
Second, the time of year, but perhaps not the title Christmas itself, is a time that, as Christian populations in general 'down tools' to relax, celebrate, and give thanks, can also offer us all a time to pause for reflection, be thankful for the people/things we have, gather those we love close and share moments, that we otherwise in our busy lives do not often get time for.
Need is perhaps not a word I would use when asking this question - perhaps 'What is the purpose of..' instead :)
