I figured I would start a more down to earthy practical thread that mirrors the philosophy section in applying certain principles to everyday use.
Generally I learned everything the hard way, so with trial and error in mind, it will share some of what I learned over the years.
I will post some videos when I learn out.
So to begin with the first post. Physical fitness is strictly adapting your body to whatever physical stimulus is applied in everyday life. Considering the sedentary nature of society a general "holistic approach" is necessary.
This approach is necessary for the obvious reasons of keeping ths muscles firm and symmetrical (all of them being used) but to instill a form of muscle memory or neurological training. The muscles respond to the firing of nerves, thus when working out one must train the nervous system as well.
The body memories movements, and the nerves instintinctivley adapt and memorize them. This memorization is crucial considering due to the hectic nature of the modern world we cannot exercise all the time. Thus it is important that a skill is introduced other than basic weight lifting.
Stick Fighting
The most general movement in the natural world is swinging an object. Be it an axe or machine to split wood, clear brush, a hammer to pound in nails or forge iron, a garden tool to dig up earth, or even an object swung in self defense...all of these share the same basic movements to such a degree that training for practical work is to train for self defense and to train for self defense is to train for practical work.
The body is only as strong as its weaking link...the grip. Gripping an object with the hands, or gripping the earth with oneself feet...grip is the center point of control.
This is where the martial art of stick fighting occurs as a means to both ends, but most importantly a general sense of health and well being. Googling it results in different schools ranging from arnis, kali, escrima and krabi krabong.
So to begin, one can get a hardwood waxwork stick 22 to 26 inches on line and set a tire on a post, use a bag, or buy dull machetes and use a tree. Practicing basic strikes interchangeabley as well as the basic foot work (all of which can be learned on line at no cost) will give a good degree of physical training in power generation by meditating on generating force from the bell button area of the body all the way to the corresponding target being struck.
This meditation will help develop a balanced musculature (all muscles will be used) buy also help in developing general balance in all movements, flexibility, speed, muscular endurance and strength but most importantly the ability to maintain the prolonged focus on ones center point of balance as they move.
Striking the object with one stick in hand, then eventually two, for a total of 3000 to 6000 strikes will not only help develop all of the above facets of the mind and body but also enable easier and more proficient use of everyday manual tools as well as a respectable base for self defense.
With 3000 to 6000 strikes a day (no different than going for a morning job) every 3 to 6 days of the week one can develop enough strength and body mechanics or "qi" energy (all the movement of the body existing in unison) one can shatter bricks and coconuts with a simple wooden stick...these objects of course being equal than or harder than the human skull. Where a stick or machete is not present (such as camping trip, being home or in car) a rolled up magazine, bottle full of liquid, sandle/shoe, purse, lamp, or any other object will suffice. Extendable batons however can replace any of these and are easy to conceal. They can be purchase online but check your local area relative to concealed carry weapons.
This basic training also enables aggression training, but where one is not so inclined to the martial aspects it directly translates to everyday practical fitness in using hand tools as well as the increased skill to use them properly.
The general footwork also translates to dancing, for those interested, or simply just moving through everyday existence with greater fluidity.
Remember to always focus on the certain points of your movements, as this will give you greater strength and clarity of body and mind, as well as the points you are striking as directing force to a center point applies to anything from gardening and building but self defense as well.
