Is it possible to avoid causing harm to animals during training? I have quarreled with a girl because of this thesis; she complained of all the circus that they were bad, bringing just troubles and hurt animals. I tried to calm her down arguing that beating animals was necessary for training?
What do you think?

Training is beneficial and at times even crucial to your survival. That's true for a human and an animal. For example, some people train animals as guides for the blind or ill. Some animals are hurt and need human assistance at times too but the human may not always be with the animal because of work or whatever so the animal must receive some training to survive some time alone too. If it doesn't get trained for it then it can die without someone being there constantly. Training is hard work always and at times painful because the body isn't used to it. But this pain is necessary and can't always be avoided. Just train carefully and expect some pain. Probably no way to avoid it but could be ways to reduce it with the right tools.

It is good if they are given a purpose. If they are trained to help us in beneficial ways then it is good. If they are trained only for entertainment this is wrong.

Above 2 posts are tantamount to saying that as long as the animals are trained for our sake, then it's alright to inflict harm on them. They're just "things" after all.
I want you to draw a contrast between animals in captivity versus animals in nature. Are they not more compliant when they are free? Why do people need ant farms when they can just observe ants on the pavement?
The Life of Apollonius recounts how elephants in captivity mourn when there aren't any humans around but immediately restrain themselves in the presence of humans. This self-control is also exercised by orangutans, sparrows, crows, etc. It's human beings who have yet to learn to exercise self-control and emotional discipline.
There are plenty of natural enthusiasts and experts who risk their lives making documentaries and films of their exploits and also explorers who wander into dangerous places. They know exactly how to handle wild untamed animals. Some go so far as to cultivate relationships with them.

Some of the things they do behind these scenes in some circuses are absolutely horrifying and inhumane and not needed for training.

I've spoken to a girl that beating animals is sometimes necessary for training them. The girl seriously waned to kill me for this. She said that there should be no other way for any training except no beating animals.
