My middle surname is "de Paula". I googled it, but I didn't find its origin. Forebears says the following: I thought it was Portuguese, but Spain and Italy have more incidences for my surname than Portugal.

It may be the Spanish variant from the Italian town "Paola". Apparently a lot of people with "de Paula" in their name were named after the biblical figure Saint Francis of Paola (Italy).... Then again I could be completely wrong :p

So, it means my surname is Spanish or Italian? The way I understand it is that your spelling is the Spanish spelling of it which was origionally taken from an Italian spelling which is similar to yours.
