The essential difference between economics and business economics is not in the economics training the students receive but, rather, in the other degree requirements.

You could get an economics degree, get a well-paying job and get an MBA while working.

Business as everyone know as trading for a profit margin. Economics is a branch of social sciences that deals with the saving of money.

Business is what you do to earn profit. Economics gives the instruction of utilizing the resources to gain the profit. Both are inter-related. Gaining a Business economics Degree helps you in keeping your earning good and letting you know what and how better are you doing your work.

From what I've heard, econ is pretty math-based at UCLA. But I think as long as you're decent in calculus/statistics you should be fine. I've only taken the lower econ classes, so I haven't actually experienced any heavy math-based econ courses. Also just as a warning, business/econ is a very competitive major, and a lot of people end up dropping it because they can't maintain the GPA to get into the actual major. As long as you stay on top of things though, you should be fine.
