I've just read an interesting (and a bit of a disgusting) article about molerats. Molerats live an eusocial life, which means they have one queen with workers etc. (like ants or wasps). Now the female molerats that do not bear young still care for the young, even though they do not produce oestrogen or other hormones that make them have this motherly behaviour. Now, where does this behaviour come from? Well these females eat the poo of the pregnant queen, which is filled with these hormones. I hope I didn't ruin your appetites! (for those of you interested in reading the article, www.nature.com/articles/d41586-018-06096-8, it might be possible that you need a subscription before you can read it, not sure if this is a free one or not)
