Did you guys know that the ancient Romans used animal sinews to make the ropes needed for their catapults to hurl stones and for their ballistas to propel bolts? This ↴ was needed for this ↴ and this ↴

Kinda cool and kinda gross but we do use animals for things. Like my violin bow has horse hair as other bows:/

Huh? Never knew the hair from the tail of a horse is strong enough to resist all the friction that comes with playing the violin. Just like the idea of meat tendons, something that you can chew, being used to make the ropes needed to make these powerful siege engines work wouldn't have crossed my mind before I read about it.
Nowadays, we use synthetic materials to produce the strings all these objects need so it's always interesting to discover what the ancients used to make their everyday items.

Yes, violins use horsehair for the bow and we must use rosin on the horsehair for it to actual make music on the strings. You do realize in times of Roman Empire everything that wasn't made of clay, stone or metal was made out of plant or animal parts, don't you? Read about materials for composite bows, you'd be surprised at its complexity and variety of materials used.
