www.thegospelcoalition.org/blogs/trevin-wax/johns-story-why-i-left-eastern-orthodoxy-for-evangelicalism/“I would have caved had I not begun reading the Bible the Baptists had given me,” John says with a smile. “As I began reading Scripture, I understood Jesus to be the only way to God. I realized I did not need the Orthodox church or even a priest to be my mediator, for Jesus was the mediator between me and the Father.” Though John does not use the term, it is clear from his testimony that he had acquired an unshakable belief in the Reformation doctrine of sola scriptura. “I realized that the Bible was the authority, even over the Church. The Bible was true, and the Church with all its traditions and rituals was wrong.” What do those who are members of the Orthodox Church think of this and the rest of what is said in the article?

I would become evangelical because the orthodox church and partly the catholic church since dawn of time persecute gypsies just like the jews. They are behind it. When I say Im Gypsy some made a joke that i read crystall balls or do some black magick. In Borat they said "Gypsy give me your tears". Gypsies were in middle ages considered "heathens" because the church was eurocentric and gypsies had dark skin. But nowadays many Gypsies accepted Jesus Christ as their Saviour. I am a convinced Christian. I am orthodox christian but I believe all christians believe in the same Bible and in the same God, in the God who is Father, Son and Holy Spirit. So I would visit evangelic church too where there are many Gypsies in that church. I followed on facebook that there are churches which are attended by alot of christian gypsies. But there is none where I live. But my mum is against, and probably my relatives too. But in orthodox church gypsies dont go to church they just celebrate saint and christmas and easter, I never heard that there is a gypsy priest or gypsy monk that they are accepted as equal, they are often not even baptised. Im if every orthodox priest baptises gypsies i read that some dont want to burry gypsies. I know a gypsy man, his name 'Gustav' ("Густав" по-русски), so he became an Orthodox about twenty years ago. I know him as my grandfather did, because he bought a library of my grandpa. Also, I know him because he and some of his friends are playing folk music at the local concert-hall. Good guys! But, I want to say that Gustav made his choice despite of things like you'd described. I mean everybody in the village loved him, because he was a great! (I swear, his voice is awesome! - He's a singer.) So, there are plenty different churches, as so many priests and visitors there. I think it's true they say 'the more people, the more opinions'. I don't think that the Church depends on people in it. I even sure that too many cases in the religious history was tied up with it - break ups on some kind of not understanding. As I said before, the history and the culture is something we must deal with firstly. I'm sure Elizabeth finally ought to agree on it. We are all human, and it can be avoided at all costs. It was very sorrow for me to read about an attitude of Catholics on it. Honestly, I was better on them in question of politeness. And I need to admire, I like Protestant because of their politeness. I can be sure in this, just because no great experience on it, but I was working with some protestant guys, some of them were visiting the same school as I was, and surely, Elizabeth, dktrav88 (just10sp, probably; I don't know whether he's protestant, but he's a great person too) and many other guys. So, I must say that it doesn't matter about what exactly church you visit, but it depends very, very strongly about traditions, that is - the history and the culture. Cheers!

i just ran through the entire non sense IMHO ( kuddos to the elites how the managed to make people of the same religion go nuts with each other ) just to get the crux of what happened ,i have never ever looked into this particular section no wonder why . it was so disappointing to see how the chat turned out to be . why cant u guys close out by presenting your respective perspectives and move on , whats with this needless effort to make the other be on your par . This is the first rule of such sensitive discussion not to practice such. Neither u are tasked for such an obligation, focus on your self and atleast have some sense as who to pick discussion with . Its a fact they are hard wired logic and reasoning will bypass for anything other they seem superior . Hence no point engaging in something non fruitful , This is why i hate all these religions to begin with , if your scriptures or whatever that was said makes u tear of each other , hell with that scripture or whatever .
Lastly there are tons of so much interesting and informative things on this platform , even something is relevant here plz avoid posting a controversial thread.

'The Clash of Titans' I know it's a movie but I never watched it. Or am I wrong it's a movie? . I live under a rock, Eugene. Just like Augustine was mentioned and I'm like who? Never heard of him in my life. Yes, it is (a movie). Augustine has a huge influence in Catholics, and also in philosophy of Middle Ages. His well-known works are 'The City of God' and 'Confessions' ("Град Божий" и "Исповедь" - I translated into English, but I don't know exactly...). So, he started to use Plato's concept of ideas according to Christian understanding of Heaven, and other things, like Christ second arriving... His main reward was on/in continuing philosophical tradition, that almost had been broken during Hellinistic period and new teachings of Christianity. Many philosophers (neoplatonistic, mostly) tried to continue it, but Augustine was more great on it. In Christology his reward was about Christ's will. The most important question was at these times - how Christ could be God and a Man at the same time? So, Augustine said on it, that Christ helped us to obtain the true will that was lost by us in... hmm... the great sin (the sin of Adam, shortly). Well, he's not famous only in this, but in several other philo questions, like, for example, on time, and the nature of consciousness. His views were very truly. Even modern science agree on it. Please, excuse me that I don't get into detail, but I think that Augustine is enough well-known person. I would advise you to read 'Confessions' - it's really worth to read. I'd say it is classics.

Im not sure if every orthodox priest baptises gypsies i read that some dont want to burry gypsies. We have no problem with you in our church plus we had Jews even and we baptise all who believe in Him just not as a baby since they can't read the bible nor recieve His teachings Acts 2:41 41 Then those who gladly received his word were baptized; and that day about three thousand souls were added to them. So you're telling me that your orthodox church breaks this commandment and doesn't like you? O.o Matthew 22 39 And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ Well, if orthodox church puts tradition over commandments then you're welcome to mine. God's commandments only in mine But I would remind them it says this... Mark 16:15 15 And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature.
And that it doesn't say this, "And He said to them, “Go into all the world and preach the gospel to every creature. Wait, no exclude the gypsies, Jews, and other people you dislike and even though I preached to Jews too but just ignore it." Shrug

For a while when i was 16-20 I was lying and such to bragg. Then in high school I met this guy, who was evangelical and me and him were friends and we talked about the bible, and about christianity, there was a catholic dude too, and one brasilian guy was also evangelical who was exchange student and i talked to him. One day then i started saying the truth most of the time (except a few times when its dangerous or there is a good reason in german we say notlüge to protect myself) but most of the time i say the truth. I know I have the holy spirit.
