I think the rise of mobile phones and smartphones made watches/wristwatches as cosmetic stuff.
Smartwatches are another story but I think most people prefer smartphones to them.

Not everyone has a smartphone, although use is growing rapidly, having reached about 70% if statistical forecasts are correct. Some of us must still be flipping our wrists to check the time of day. Also, while smartphones are subject to reception blackout behind hills or inside metal buildings—as well as the dreaded network outage—wristwatches are not. (Given the phone’s own clock, however, this will interrupt your tempus fugit only if the battery dries while out of contact with cell towers.) Smartphone monthly bills tend to run high, with a 3-year contract chaining you to your phone even if you move out of its service area, and making you fume as you see new, lower teaser rates advertised if you stay put.
At $40, your Timex will run for up to seven years on one battery, keeping time within 5 to 15 seconds per month of the National Bureau of Standards’ cesium clock at Boulder, Colorado. The only thing rendering quartz watches a bit inaccurate is the fact that the crystal is affected by temperature, contracting and thus vibrating at higher frequency when chilled. The Timex shrugs off dust, mechanical shock and immersion in water with aplomb. Good mechanical watches are almost as accurate, last for decades, never bill you, need no battery, and often self-wind when worn, as hand movements swing a little torsion pendulum inside. (Although they will stop if left for two days on a nightstand.)
I guess I’m just a lover of Swiss timepieces.~ Smartphone penetration rate, United States, 2010-22. Statistica www.statista.com/statistics/201183/forecast-of-smartphone-penetration-in-the-us/

Many people are just big fans of wrist watch collections and are ready to give a lot of money for a collection of such watches, even if they do not wear them!

Many people are just big fans of wrist watch collections and are ready to give a lot of money for a collection of such watches, even if they do not wear them! "Not using the collected stuff" is a common behavior among the collectors. For example, some people just like to buy and collect sneakers and they never use them. I think some collectors have some kind of OCD or extreme obsession with some items (both real and virtual things).

Yeah, I use a wristwatch mainly because I think having one looks cool. Well, you just proved my point: wristwatch as cosmetic stuff
