I don't disagree with his analysis, but there is another factor I'd like to add. The technological development has happened far beyond people's ability to keep up with it. Why isn't there a consumer revolt against Windows 10? Because it's only the small fragment of computer users who actually would benefit from being allowed to make their own choices. The rest are better off with Mircosoft making choices for them. I conscious user want to be able to decide when to update. Leave that up to the unconscious user, and Windows might be left not updated, with security risk as a result. More options confuse the average user, who just want everything to work without having to put much thought into it. The practice of treating games as something you rent rather than own, would upset the conscious minority of games who genuinely love games and would obviously want to own them. If you really like a game, you want to be able to play it 20 years from now. But the majority doesn't have the ability to genuinely like anything beyond how they like an instagram photo. It's superficiality vs depth. Fakery vs what's genuine. Awareness vs mindlessness.

karlI agree with you. That mindset has already damaged the whole concept of video gaming. I should mention two similar negative trends among new generations of gamers: 1)Sony, Xbox, Steam, and GOG have their own achievement systems. While achievement system sounds good in theory and it could contribute to the replayability of games, in reality it caused the rise of obsessed achievement hunters who just play games for unlocking & obtaining achievements. Most of them don't play their games when they gain 100% achievements. They abandon their games and buy new games with achievements, and that cycle never ends. That's one of the reasons why Steam Store is full of garbage/mediocre games. Because some players just buy & play games for achievements. 2) Having a collector mindset and a large library of unplayed games is common among a considerable number of gamers. They just collect games and don't play most of their games. Big companies and some publishers have learned how to use this type of gamers as the best source for making more money.
